  • September 10, 2013: Peter spoke on "How energy efficiency fits into broader sustainability strategies" at ComEd's Energy Efficiency Expo. Talk overview: The United States’ buildings sector accounts for about 40% of U.S. primary energy consumption and 40% of carbon dioxide emissions. These facts illuminate why energy conservation must be a core component of any sustainability strategy, but it’s not the only one. What other components are important and how does energy efficiency integrate with them in a successful sustainability plan? Learn about market drivers that cause businesses to implement sustainability plans, strategies for making the business case for sustainability investments, financial metrics such as cost of delay, and approaches to setting sustainability goals.

With so many benefits resulting from retrofitting buildings including job creation, local economic development, greenhouse gas reductions, and increased national security, as well as with the Federal Government investing heavily in this industry, why is the retrofit market still nascent?

After introducing the overarching concepts and technical approaches of conducting a retrofit, this session will review the retrofit market’s trends, drivers, and barriers and explore how well various governmental and private sector programs have influenced the market. We’ll also consider a broader perspective on retrofits which may suggest innovative opportunities to further drive the retrofit market.
